Living a Baha'i Life

Lauren became a Baha'i in May 1973, learning of the Faith from the efforts of Seals & Crofts while they lived in the area. From a third generation family in Culver City, Lauren provided personal connections to the core business and service organizations. Her art representing the cultural diversity in Culver City was selected for the city-sponsored Fiesta La Ballona logo, a circle of children in traditional costume holding hands around the city seal. She was a driving force behind a series of Panel Discussions held in Culver City in the 1980's called World in Transition. As chair of the Local Spiritual Assembly of the Baha'is of Culver City for more than 25 years, Lauren has been an example of opening her home for firesides, guiding consultation of many differing opinions to find the the spark of truth, and hosting Ayyam-i-Ha Parties, Nineteen Day Fast dawn breakfasts, and other gatherings. More recently, she and her Girl Scout Troop 701 have been collecting hats for cancer patients, filling them with cheer and soothing lotions, to be given free to both adults and children undergoing chemotherapy. This program they call "Hats for Life" is being spread by other Girl Scout Troops in the Neighborhood Service Unit and hopefully across the country. Her embroidered pillow cover project was taken to share with the friends in China. Living just a few blocks from the Middle School, she and Don have been having a group of her daughter Ashley's friends come by for their "Thursday Breakfast Club" to offer some dozen or more kids a chance to have a nutritious breakfast, learn social graces, discuss issues they face, learn planning skills, and partake of basic spiritual and character models. Lauren has been fighting lung cancer for over six years and has helped with clinical testing of some of the new cancer medications. Her example of "living the life" has affected her neighbors, the Culver City Girl Scout Neighborhood Service Unit - leaders and girls alike, the Angeles Girl Scout Trainers, the Culver City Interfaith Alliance, the local Wellness Center, Cancer Walk organizers, and the Baha'is in Culver City and Santa Monica. She was a facilitator for the Comprehensive Deepening Program and when being visited in the hospital by her Ruhi class members, commented that she had done her "reading homework" but had not brought it with her!
